A Study In Contrasts...

I feel like a like a little surfing, and when I go virtual surfing naturally I head for the primo spots. Today, courtesy of Surfer magazine, I think I'll hit both Mavericks and Peahi, and you can click here to go with me (there's a brief ad, followed by the Big Show). Both big wave spots, but so different. Mavericks is cold, gray and vicious. Peahi is warm, blue and monstrous. And both can kill you...

Mean-Ass Mavericks: "Hail Mary, full of grace..."

I'm no surfer, I come here for the sailing. Nevertheless, it is fascinating, but I have one question. In the Mavericks portion of the video, there are numerous times where 2 to 3 people all grab the same wave. I thought that there was a line and that the person farthest to the right (if the wave is breaking to the right) gets the wave. Who has right of way?

If you are in the water (looking at the beach, and the face of the wave is breaking to your right, then the left-most person (closest to where the peak of the breaking wave begins) has priority.

At Mavericks, I could believe, so many folks wipeout at take-off that multi-surfer (or party) waves happen on the off chance that you are the last one standing. THis is also typical of more "heavy" or local breaks such as Malibu when 14 people on a wave is not uncommon. Rude, but not uncommon.
